Harmen Jan te Selle emigrated from the Netherlands in 1865 with his brother Jan Hendrik. After a three-year stay in Wisconsin, Harmen Jan migrated west with his wife Berendina and homesteaded farmland near Firth, Lancaster County, Nebraska. After Berendina died in 1876, Harmen married Johanna Arnolda Brethouwer. Together they raised 16 children in Firth, where they lived for the rest of their lives.
